Slavic Church of Salvation
James Guerrero Architects, Inc. provided programming, schematic design, design development, and construction services for this 33,700 square foot church. By strategically placing and designing the building to take advantage of the site's natural slope, the need for extensive grading and fill material was significantly reduced. Challenges included designing a very large and functional multi-purpose building that would blend in harmoniously with the site and have an aesthetically pleasing, dignified appearance.
The floor plan was designed to also maximize the benefits of the sloped site. The main level consists of the sanctuary, fellowship hall, offices and kitchen, while the lower level houses the primary school. Both floors thereby have individual on-grade entrances allowing for separation of traffic, with decreased traffic flow in the school area. An elevator connects the school, main sanctuary level and mezzanine.
The primary school consists of 10 classrooms, a library, a multipurpose room, an education office, restrooms, storage, plus mechanical and custodial space. By orienting this area at the low end of the site, the school is able to safely access the open space dedicated for play fields.

St. John’s Episcopal Church
This design consolidated a collection of portables into one cohesive building. Our design focused on using strong geometry to anchor the building on this prominent corner in the neighborhood. A simple square composed of the new fellowship hall, offices and kitchen was centered on the existing sanctuary. All the interior spaces are clustered around the new larger fellowship hall. Interior windows between the sanctuary and fellowship hall and a new sound system allow for comfortable overflow seating with views of the altar. The hipped roof culminates at an attractive bell tower with a hand carved cedar cross. Challenges included: eliminating 3 separate floor heights while maintaining access, maintaining the existing parking lot, and leaving the Memorial Garden undisturbed. The new entry is covered, yet open and welcoming.

Graham Emmanuel Baptist Church
This addition includes the design of a new 800 seat sanctuary, plus classrooms, offices and a youth center totaling 24,500 square feet. The sanctuary is set at a 45 degree angle to the existing building, facing the entrance drive. The gabled front entrance gives the sanctuary a strong identity. Minor entrances have smaller entry gables. A new circulation hall connects the old and new buildings both functionally and aesthetically. The Youth Center has the ability to function separate from the rest of the church for after hours events. The building committee wanted to minimize the need for flat roofs. Only 1,400 s.f. of roof is flat, none of which is over offices or sensitive equipment. This roof top area is also used for the heating and ventilation equipment which is well-screened from the surrounding grounds and neighbors. The sanctuary floor slopes to provide improved viewing to the altar platform.

Pilgrim Lutheran Church
James Guerrero Architects provided programming and schematic design for this 20,000 s.f. church addition. The new design included a Multipurpose Room for assembly purposes and recreational programs, classrooms and supporting offices, plus storage and restrooms. Care was taken to organize the building more efficiently, resulting in the creation of a new office wing with direct access to the main entry.
A new narthex provides a spacious entrance to the building allowing members to meet and greet each other on their way to services or Sunday school. It also provides a prominent, visible entry for the offices.
Challenges included smoothly blending the existing sanctuary and fellowship hall into the new design and combining the variety of roofs on the existing spaces into a singularly attractive structure.
